PRESS RELEASE
NEILL WRIGHT: To Anywhere and Nowhere
Dec 3 – Dec 31, 2020
‘To Anywhere and Nowhere’ by Neill Wright was inspired by the anxieties of 2020 and the concomitant desire for escape. While preparing for the exhibition during the lockdown, the Jo’burg-based artist explains, ‘my only resources were my computer and tablet’. To deal with changing circumstances and in order to shake off the chaos of the pandemic and politics, Wright turned away from his usual working process and created, instead, his own imaginary landscapes ‘based on nowhere in particular’.
These fictional spaces combine bold flowers and lush leaves with cool, shady zones. We are reminded of the possibility for growth and renewal. The bright, organic forms of Wright’s paintings and sculptures provide a welcome sanctuary from a dark year.
