OASIS: 25TH ANNIVERSARY GROUP EXHIBITION

Everard Read Cape Town is proud to celebrate our 25th anniversary in 2021.
The gallery opened its doors in the V&A Waterfront in September 1996, moving to Portswood Ridge where it’s currently located in 1999. Everard Read Cape Town’s CIRCA was unveiled in November 2016 in the historic Ulundi House (originally built in 1889). This addition to the Everard Read/CIRCA group has allowed the gallery in Cape Town to expand its exhibition schedule to include further formal gallery spaces and a sculpture garden.
Our annual summer exhibition for this milestone year will showcase a range of work which represents the gallery’s dynamic identity. This includes painting and sculpture from leading contemporary artists, emerging younger creatives, and those sadly no longer with us who were instrumental in the shaping of this gallery.
Titled ‘Oasis’, the exhibition frames our ambitions and intentions for our gallery, namely to be an oasis in many senses – a sanctuary, as well as a confluence; a meeting place where ideas are shared; a watering hole for thirsty souls; a permanent place for the transitory, and transitory place for the permanent.
It has been fascinating and gratifying during the pandemic to see how the gallery has served as an emotional and experiential refuge for so many citizens, and a lifeline for artists. This is a stark reminder that, if the idea of a gallery has any merit, it’s fundamentally in its ability to hold a space for a community, for nourishment and succour, as well as be a place for interrogation, conversation and conviviality. We at Everard Read feel very lucky to continue to be able to follow our calling in collaboration with our artists and audiences.
