COME AGAIN
Come Again takes a mischievous, critical and deliberately irreverent look at the Modernist canon. Borrowing, bending and subverting the visual languages of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Rousseau, Monet and Georges Braque, the participating artists turn the familiar stories of twentieth-century art history inside out.
The artists mine Modernism for its recognisable tropes—Cubist fragmentation, Rousseau’s lush jungles, bold colour, distortion and exaggerated form—and repurpose them as tools of critique. What has traditionally been presented as artistic progress becomes something more complicated: a history shaped not only by innovation, but by who was permitted to participate, who was given authority and who was left out.
For generations, women artists have too often appeared in the margins of this story: as muses, footnotes, exceptions or supporting characters. By appropriating and transforming the languages of Modernism, the artists claim authorship over a visual tradition that has historically claimed authority without them.
